I've been fasting on football. Oh sure, I still swipe through every story on the ProFootballTalk app on my phone. I'm not a Luddite. But preseason football -- I didn't watch a snap.
(I was prepared to watch the Hall of Fame game but that's a different story.)
So what happened last year? Oh yes, I move to Colorado and the Broncos win the Super Bowl. It was hardly surprising. Championships follow me. When I moved to Lexington, UK won back to back hoops titles under Pitino. I was in Ann Arbor when neighbor rivals Michigan State won the NCAA men's basketball title. And in Florida, Tampa won the Lombardi Trophy and the Stanley Cup. The Cubs should hire me to move to Chicago and break their curse.
But some things never change. Though Peyton Manning is no longer playing on Sundays, he's still on our TVs pitching products and showing up in broadcast booths.
For the Browns, it's nothing but change. Maybe that's the problem. Just think -- if Carmen Policy, Dwight Clark and Chris Palmer were still leading the Browns since 1999, odds are the last 15 years would have been more successful. It's hard to imagine it being any worse. I keep trying to have their back -- Tom Heckert is a genius! -- but it's futile. Only when it is least expected, will the Browns ever do anything to surprise me. For that reason, I don't expect great things this year.
At least that's what I tell myself. Deep inside, I think, maybe that defense isn't so bad? Maybe Joe Haden will be a hundred percent and have a career year. Maybe these rookies were chosed by the mathematical wizards and will be awesome. What if Terrell Prior lives up to the hype we first heard when he was tearing up Pennsylvania high school sports. I don't know much about this Corey Coleman kid but his name is close enough to Casey Coleman so of course I'm rooting for him.
So many maybes. It's a benefit of the doubt only a Browns fan can grant this franchise.
You know what would be "That's So Browns"? If they finish 5-11 again and have the 8th pick in the draft and still don't land a franchise player. Big picture, this team needs a 2-14 season more than they need another 5-11 season. That's how the Cavs landed LeBron. The Browns need an epically bad season -- I just hope they don't go 0-16 and that dubious honor remains forever with the Detroit Lions.
For the record, I left Michigan before that happened.
Now onto the predictions:
